This week is all about the Canadian big wigs in the shop, friends!
We have Soia & Kyo in the shop! Actually, the funnest part is exploring their designs up close. It’s always unique, and there is always a strong element of architecture to their designs that is so fun. This jacket is a simple light-weight coat, with just a bit of drama with the way the hood and collar sit.
I think this particular shape has a bit of a casual/gamine vibe going as opposed to the usual No Kids Allowed feel of some of their more futuristic creations.
Ok, so we need to have a big talk about this one. It looks like a trench, but the fabric is much lighter and feels more like a flowey rayon dress. I made a stranger try it on for me to let know if it should be in the dress section or the coat rack. We agreed that the cuffs on the sleeves and the double breasted buttons could only be for a coat, and made it impossible for this one to cross over into the category of dress. BUT.
The silhouette of this coat is totally vintage-dress style, and there is SO much material on the skirting that looks stunning when it moves. In conclusion, I think this is the kind of coat Kate Middleton would wear, and therefor I am hanging it in the coat section. (Please come try it on and we can have a big talk about it!).
Weeeeeeeee, grey, witchy Repettos! I love that they didn’t over-design these in terms of shape and heel etc. and just kept it to a sensible heel and no-nonsense laces…..
….but then blasted the whole shoe with this delicate paisley pattern!
Beautiful!
So, ModCloth has named this one the “Beauty by the Bushel Strawberry Cardigan” (I love the way ModCloth names their items, BTW! They make it possible for me to imagining I’m travelling by train with a trusty notebook no matter what it is I’m looking at on their site!). I am definitely feeling the need for whimsy at this point in our season, and I think this cardigan is bringing it without being over the top. It’s a Wink at Winter of a sweater. (Could I pitch that to ModCloth as a name for something?? Would it make me famous??)
Anyways, STRAWBERRIES!
OK, friends. Our special treat this week is……Smoking Lily! But this is no ordinary Smoking Lily purse. This is something I have never seen from our Canadian mother-ship. This bag is leather.
The suppleness of this leather coupled with my random general knowledge of Smoking Lily leads me to believe that is likely an upcycle of a leather product, or some sort of creative use of remains, but whatever its origins it is really lovely. The exterior has an angry octopus print. (I think Angry Octopus could also be the name of some type of ModCloth garment, like “The Angry Octopus Day Dress”. Oooo, or maybe “Angry Octopus” could be an emotional label! Like, “The roads outside are complete Angry Octopus!”)
And even more fun than the Octopus print outside is the print on the lining inside!
Angry Octopus on the outside, prints of various sharp objects on the inside. Really, this purse has it all!
I have a soft landing for you though, friends. Long time Pony fans know that when we get Smoking Lily in the shop, there is never only one. So here is a more quintessential Smoking Lily standard: a tank top with a mushroom print on it!
Friends, I have a Smoking Lily top with this mushroom print on it! It’s sooooo cute!
And FRIENDS! This on is a local Sabrina Butterfly skirt!! I met her once at a playground in Avonmore! So you know what that means…..it means I can say that….I KNOW HER!!!!!!
This skirt is all kinds of wearable thanks to the shape and colour, and the star of the show is obviously the great corduroy fabric and the incredible belt with its wooden belt buckle!
Hey, you can wear it with the ModCloth cardi!
I am all about oxfords this year, and these patent leather creamy ones are absolutely breaking my heart because they don’t fit me. They are just so pretty!
They have this great cut at the ankle that I think makes them so feminine and takes away the clunky feel that oxfords can have at times. They are elegant with out being cutesy and I am dead now. And if I’m dead I can’t feel anything, so please put these onto my feet after I have died so that I can fulfill my dream from the beyond.
In other excitement, we have some Everlane in the shop and it turns out that, like Smoking Lily, Everlane also does not come alone! We’ve got a bunch of pieces out, but for today let’s enjoy this classic white sweatshirt/not-a-real-sweatshirt-so-you-can-wear-it-to-the-office.
You could wear this one with the Sabrina Butterfly skirt and my Dream Shoes!
And it’s not a Wednesday without some Oak+Fort! Hopefully you can see the details on the picture even though it’s black.
The skirt is pleated, with larger pleats on the front that turn to smaller pleats around the hips.
And the back has an elastic waist!
This beautiful scarf is hand woven!
And I love these bright colours and the big shapes!
Guess what? These awesome pants are from the men’s section! For real, friends, there are so many gems in there and, despite the name, clothes-loving humans of all genders and no genders should check out our men’s section.
Here’s my Smoking Lily top with the same mushroom print on it!
If you are reading the blog right now but are oblivious to Instagram you can skip this paragraph. But if you are on Instagram, be sure to visit the Girl Brain IG (the all woman sketch comedy troupe!) because we are part of their awesome PALentine’s giveaway contest they have set up with some other local businesses and great prizes! Closes on the 13th, so get your name in there and enjoy your $100 Red Pony gift certificate!
That’s it for this week, friends. But let me tell you, our backroom is BURSTING right now! It is so packed that I can’t even squeeze back there to take a picture for you! We are putting new stuff out as fast as we can steam it so you should definitely stop by. I will be in on Saturday as usual, so swing by and we can discuss Smoking Lily’s “take back” initiative, our feelings about Everlane’s approach to sustainability and what we would wear if we were Kate Middleton!
