Happy New Years, friends! I’ve missed you and we have so many things to discuss, but first…THE CLOTHES!
It’s always exciting to get Canadian Soia & Kyo in the shop, and I feel like the last few pieces were lovely, but to me Soia & Kyo is at its best when it brings the drama AND whimsy.
The oversized buttons are *so* Soia & Kyo, and the placement only at the top of the coat plays with dimensions in a way that feels fun and feminine.
And check out the adorable crescent moon pockets!!
Also typical of this brand, if you like the outside, just wait until you see what’s on the inside! Ta-dah!
AND THEN there are more surprises!!
OK, friends, guess what this skirt is? Done guessing? It’s……Smoking Lily!!
I’m a bit wary of polka-dots myself, because they easily lean too far into cuteness/lady-bug vibes for my liking. But for this skirt, I think the rust colour of the fabric (this rust colour is my new favourite colour, friends!) and the patchiness of the print give it a bit of an edgy, almost industrial feel.
Let’s do a massive purse-explore! I actually love the shape of this purse, and although it’s weird, I love the faux-shearling!
So soft, and just being itself: a furry purse!!
Now, friends, you all know I have very particular purse needs. I’ve come to realize that the first measure of if a purse will be roomy enough is the size of the base and gusset, NOT the width of the purse. In this case we have a very generous gusset.
Roomy, yes, but will it hold my mom-wallet, reusable Baggu bags, knitting project and all the keys to every vehicle I’ve ever owned because you never know that someday I might see my old 1998 Honda Civic on the street and need to get into it to look under the car seat and finally find that U2 ticket-stub?
YES IT WILL!
Also holds my first-aid/medicine pouch (you won’t be laughing when you need Advil and a band-aid) and vintage lip-stick case!
Now, friends, here is a very, very special treat. This pink vintage dress has maybe caused a few car accidents while on the mannequin in the window. Isn’t it stunning?!? In true vintage-dress form, it is very small and features a great number hook fasteners to keep that dramatic cowl in place. (I was hoping to find a union tag in it, but there are no tags at all in this one.)
Here’s the gorgeous pink taffeta (that also looks like raw silk, but what are the chances?)…..
….and the sheer sleeve with the cuff and wee button! Loooooooovvvvveee!
And then let’s just go for it with these white vintage shoes!!
Such amazing shape!!
Ooooooo, friends, I love a grown-up, glam bomber!
The body of the jacket is this lovely camo-wool. I actually love the tones of camo (um, because they look really good on me), and the fact that this is done in wool is such unique touch. Then there’s the sequined sleeves. Friends, I love the pairing of the two textures; the rugged wool and the flashy sequins work so well together!
And the sleeves are not just regular gold sequins, friends. Oh, no. These are flip sequins. Now, when I was young (in the 1800s), we just had REGULAR sequins. They were shiny and they were JUST FINE. Now, if you don’t have small children to explain to you/beg you to buy anything with flip sequins, then fear not my friends, and get ready for a lesson. Flip sequins are sequins that have a different colour on each side of the sequin disque (in this case black on one side and gold on the other), and are sewn onto the fabric in such a way that by running your hand across it one way, it flips the sequins and changes the colour (or sometimes creates another image). Kinda like velvet, but shinier and sparkly-er with a way better payoff.
Behold! I have flipped the sequins to their black side…using magic!
Other than the hours of fun you will have playing with the flip sequins, they actually totally work on this jacket. First of all, gold with camo? YES. But also, much like velvet, you can’t always control how the sequins are going to flip as you go about your day, so there can be random organic switching of the sequins between gold and black, which plays so well with the lights and darks of the camo.
It’s glam without being too precisely glam. I love it!
Friends, you have to take a closer look at this rad ring!
Doesn’t this look like a piece of bark?!?
Look! It’s that rust colour again that is now my favourite (move over, mustard yellow!). But friends, there is something very special about these pants. Are you ready? These pants are from Ursa Minor in Montreal, and Ursa Minor is designed by one half of the Vera-Véro design team, which is to say by one of the Nokomis designers, Elizabeth Hudson, who is now in Montreal! I KNOW! Now do you love these simple pants even more?!
Guess what you could wear with the Ursa Minor pants? This Loft 82 sweater!
So pretty!
Found this hilarious buddy in the men’s section!
I think this is a limited edition image, but this dude pops up on a bunch of the artwork from Taco Skate!
Awwwww, we all love this Lululemon classic, right?
So soft, reversible and convertible!
And from the 50% off section:
So many announcements this week, friends! Now, I blame the Gregorian calendar for the timing of this; I’m pretty sure that with my Metric Calendar Theory I could have passed this information on to you in a timely manner.
So, first of all, Kennedy (who you visited with on Mondays and Wednesdays) is packing up her cropped-tops, baggy jeans and granny coat and leaving us to go to London for Fashion Reasons. Sadly, there is no legal way that I can stop her from leaving and just stay working at Red Pony for ever. Her last day is, gulp, today (fault of the calendar!!). Friends, you know I do not adapt well to change, so I totally get if you need to immediately crawl into your bed and rock back and forth murmuring “I can be an ‘80s ski-mom, I can be an ‘80s ski-mom” over and over again. (I’m writing this from the depths of my covers right now!)
To ease our pain, though, friends, we will have a new team-mate who is very similar to Kennedy: Shaney is also a white lady with brown hair!
Haha, but for real, in a bizarre coincidence Kennedy and Shaney used to work together! Shaney bases all her travel plans around consignment shopping (seriously!), wrote an award winning musical and has an adorable puppy. She will be in Red Pony on Wednesdays and Thursdays, or you can visit her at MEAT (another locally [woman] owned business!).
Ok, next. Now, don’t freak out. Maybe go to your happy place for a minute. Are you doing it? Is there ice-cream there? There will be no blog for the next 2 weeks. I KNOW. This is totally the fault of ….THE CALENDAR! Rod, the girls and I are going away for a few days, but it somehow straddles TWO Wednesdays! So think about this: in Metric Time one week would last 10 days, in which case I would not miss 2 blogs, only 1. Just saying.
(Recently, friends, the author of one of my favourite fashion and knitting blogs said she was stopping the blog, and I am DEVASTATED and plan to remain under my blankets until spring. So I totally get how upsetting this can be. Let me know if you would like me to write a note to your HR about why you won’t be able to come into the office until January 29th.)
Red Pony will be closed Saturday January 18th, but otherwise it’s business as usual! I will be in the shop this Saturday, though, so be sure to come in because we have a lot of catching up to do!
