Friends, it’s hot and I don’t want to get too excited about all the fall stuff coming into the store right now, but at the same time I’m TOO EXCITED about the fall stuff, so let’s just go with it!
So, in my mind Hackwith is like “the other Everlane”. Like, kinda sustainable, kinda unattainable and kinda weird. And you know I love weird! This flowey jacket doesn’t have fibre tags, but to my trained touch it is made of Tencel (which makes sense from Hackwith). Oooo, shall we quickly refresh our knowledge of Tencel/Lyocell fabric? It’s a human manufactured fibre (closest relative would be rayon) that is considered “sustainable” because it produces almost no waste or pollution during manufacturing. It’s made from wood-pulp, and is a very durable and breathable soft fabric. This is why we love it! However, we may want to ask ourselves “is the wood product they use in the making of this fabric the primary nutritional source of any cuddly woodland creatures that may go extinct because the only plant that can eat has been over-harvested to make Tencel?”. Or, we can also choose to close that door and open the door to the freezer and dig out from the very back under the frozen peas and questionable -and unidentifiable?- frozen meat the Drumstick that you hid that one time when you got the 4 pack of Drumsticks but told the kids there were only two in the box and hid the others to eat yourself in just such an emergency.
Um, so anyways…….oh, yeah, I love this jacket! For real, though, friends, I like it because it is minimalist with a great futuristic vibe, but it’s also flowey and feminine.
And did you notice the one pocket is actually TWO pockets?! I have never seen this kind of detail, and I loooooooove it!
No buttons or zippers on this one. Here’s how it looks all drapey and open….
…..and here it is tied up with the belt. This piece is super well-designed; when it is cinched the lapels fall into place easily.
Let’s explore these wicked vintage boots!
Although they have a rounded toe, they other wise have the fixings of a traditional cowboy boot with the crown, scallop top and pullstraps minus the decorative stitching.
But things get reeeeeeeeeal interesting *inside* the boot……
I see a date!!!!!!! 1992!!!! I remember it well: I was deep sea diving to a sunken ship off the coast of Nevis in the Caribbean that I had searched for for 35 years; there was treasure on that ship, you see, and it was imperative that my team find it first before our rivals could get it. Anyways, that’s how we know these boots are vintage, and it’s so exciting to find a hand-written date like this!
OK, friends, you know how I’m weird about pants, but I am even weirder about shorts! But, I’m into these shorts for various reasons. First, this fabric is a super thick jersey-knit type material, which is very forgiving. Secondly, the shape is very wide and kind of looks like a skirt, but is clearly not trying to be a skirt, which is different (and I like different).
Thirdly, it has a very wide waist-band (also forgiving!), and fourthly it has this cute little notch detail.
To me, they read like a super comfortable retro-ish pair of shorts, so I would say wear them pulled high! Like this!
Our special treat this week is -gulp- a Ferragamo sling-bag from the future!
Yes, this.
In case you can’t figure out what you are looking at (technology from the future can be hard for us Earthlings to understand), you would wear it across your back (no, you cannot wear it as a belt, the structured elements are geometrically designed to be worn cross-body) like this:
It’s a nice normal-purse shape…..
….and holds normal-purse things like your mom-wallet, favourite cloth mask, keys to your house and the car you had 2 cars ago that you keep because it reminds you of your blissful pre-children life, medicine pouch because you love feeling important when someone asks for a band-aid, advil or a pill full of poison from post-apocalyptic toads to swallow when caught by the Offshore Police and, of course, a reusable bag!
And just for fun:
Ooooooooooo, friends, we actually have so much incredible vintage in the shop that I thought of doing an all-vintage blog…..but then we had all this other cool stuff I wanted to share with you and I got overwhelmed and had to go eat a Drumstick and decided you’ll just have to come into the shop and see the vintage yourself! This blazer is wool, and it is so gorgeous!
It’s seriously called “Sauci”!
I think it’s the speckled dimension of colour that make this one so beautiful to look at!
And I looooooooooove the rich purple lining!
Alright, this one is a very special piece, friends. This dress was handmade in Nairobi!
It’s a simple a-line shape with bell sleeves.
(It was hard to get the picture of the shape of the sleeves today, but you get the idea.)
The fabric is the star of the show here, of course. The colours are super saturated, and the pattern is crisp. I can hear all the compliments already!
There is a generous seam allowance as well. I bring this up because although the dress pattern is simple, this shows me that thought was put into the making of this piece, with no corners cut to make it cheaper.
We had a lovely vacation, full of chips between every meal and wine any time of the day….so basically the same as what we do at home during a pandemic, amiright?! Ok, but also with sunshine and water.
That’s it for this week, friends! This week Alex will be in the shop on Thursday if you want to pop in and be soothed by her soft, calming voice and whimsical outfits, and I will be in on Thursday and Saturday if you want to have an intense conversation with me about The Empress pub closing and what the heck happened with Clare while filming The Bachelorette!
