Friends, you know I don’t mess around when it comes to a potential-pants-peeing warning, right? So, go to the bathroom now (even if you think you don’t need to!), and wash your hands, then look in the mirror and give yourself a smile and a “love you, babe” and then you’ll be ready to read the blog.
Now, this I was not expecting. I feel like we’ve gotten used to the traditional -and fabulous-Sabrina Butterfly pants, but for some reason I never expected a whimsical skirt! I love the shape and obviously solid construction, but that asymmetrical peak at the front across the waist is the most flattering thing ever!
I love the “crafy mom” ribbon detail down the front (also down the back, but I didn’t take a pic).
I think these red shell buttons are my favourite part of this skirt! The buttons are actually functional (that’s how you get in and out of the skirt), but I love love love the retro vibe they give to the whole look!
Weeeee, this one if from one of our local faves Oak + Fort, and, friends, I love when they do this type of unexpected traditional stuffy stuff! Like a black knit cardigan with lapels!
PEE ALERT, FRIENDS! We have in the shop a real-life -gulp- Cambridge Traveller bag from the Cambridge Satchel Company. I am now dead. Go on without me!
This leather beauty was handmade in England and comes from woman-owned business Cambridge Satchel Co., which started at a kitchen table! This version of the traveller has a magnetic snap for easy access.
The Traveller is styled after a traditional camera bag, so it’s more of a square shape and, like the other Cambridge Satchel Co. designs, it is super simple with only one front pocket and that’s it.
The Traveller holds my many important purse items that I can’t leave the house without in case I meet a Time Lord who appears to take me away for 45 minutes but we were actually travelling through time, space and dimensions for 8 months during which I will definitely be needing my mom-wallet, multiple reusable bags, hand cream, medicine pouch and first-aid kit, knitting, 2 packs of gum and earbuds so that when I return I can’t hear my kids asking for a snack….AGAIN.
Embossed!
This cream tunic is also from Oak + Fort, but guess what? It’s silk! Now look again!
I love the casual, night-shirt feel of this one. And check out that scalloped edge and sweet embroidery ….
….which is on the sleeves too! I love this small detail that lets the silk be the star of the show in this one.
Things might get a bit weird here, friends, but I know you can handle it. So I’ll start by saying that this dusty-pink dress is from Workhall (I KNOW!) and it’s velvet.
Now, through the power of imagination you will have to picture what I am about to describe to you: the hem of the skirt is designed to hold the shape of the skirting in a permanent twirl. The hem is stuffed with a thick elastic -and maybe there is a wire in there?- so it protrudes in a wavey shape all around the bottom of the skirting. The finished product looks AM-A-ZING. I have never seen anything like this, it’s like a futuristic/sculptural interpretation of crinoline! Like, this must be how Jane Jetson’s dress is!
The top is a peek-a-boo halter style (check out how pretty that velvet pattern is too!)….
….and in the back with little buttons at the top! This dress is so fun!
Gorgeous, vintage-y Pikalinos! Friends, am I nuts or do we think these shoes would go great with the Workhall dress?
I love the colour….
….and the low heel!
This shoe is total Audrey Hepburn in Roman Holiday!
Someone else to add to our list of Canadian Faves: Emma Knudsen! Friends, this oversized, ruffle-minimalism is all over the place these days, and I at first I was all “Um, wha???” but now I’m all “Ruffle-Minimalism is my middle name!”.
For this week’s Old Lady Vintage piece, I could not resist sharing these awesome black shorts with you! Wear with your chunky white runners and a floral blouse! And plop that scoop of Frosé into your wine glass will chatting with your friends on the other end of your backyard!
The tiny belt jewel makes it fancy!
And, yes, you go ahead and have another scoop of Frosé, because these shorts have an elastic waist across the back!
Friends, we are about to have an explore of these beautiful beaded fringe earrings!
These ones are worth a close look because I think they are handmade. There is something so subtle and joyful about these! So let’s pause and admire, really admire, the bead work here.
See how the connection between the pendant and the stud looks like a repurposed necklace link? I feel like this is a choice a maker would make, not a manufacturer.
And then the back clinches my theory that these are made by hand. The felt backing looks very organic to me. There is quality craftship here!
I get that you are probably exhausted from running to the bathroom and that maybe you’ve just decided to stay in the bathroom to read the rest of the blog (no judgement, in fact that is very practical and efficient and I admire you for it!) (be sure to wash your hands and finger-gun your reflection with a quick “you’re doing great, sweetie”!). Good choice, because those of us trying to hold in our pee when we get excited are in trouble! Seriously, friends, this skirt is going to go up in What I saw Wednesday skirt-history along with that wheat skirt we had way back when we were on 109th street. Here we have a New Your at Night skirt!
All the classic NY elements are here: the Statue of Liberty….
….the Brookly Bridge and Staten Island Ferry….(I’m totally making this up, friends. I have never been to NY, but I do own every season of Sex and The City!)…
…. and the Empire State Building with an adorable crescent moon!
I miss you, friends! The latest shop news is: there is no news. We will not be opening in May. This is because I have not finished growing my epic lady-moustache, and a half-way lady-moustache is just silly. Depending on math and science, we might open in June. Thank you so much for sticking with us and all your support during these unpredictable months, friends. I could not have grown this moustache without you!
As always, all the items from the blog (and more!) are available in our online store, and I’m giving you a head start before the Instagram People. Delivery is free in Edmonton, which means we get to see each other briefly as I [inexplicably duck and] run away from your door! Friends, your purchases are the reason we are able to stay closed and survive until we can safely open again, and if I could hug you, inappropriately pat your hair and share my blizzard with you on your porch I totally would!
