Friends, I'm starting to develop complex feelings about shorts. Forever it was clear to me that I cannot wear shorts (I can barely wear pants!); they're hard to fit, and as a very old vampire they seem to "young" and "sporty" for me. (Trust me, neither of those words could be used to describe me!). But now we have some really interesting specimens in at Red Pony and I'm starting to see them in a new light. Let's start with Ted Baker leather shorts! Neither "leather" nor "Ted Baker" resonate as "sporty" or "young" with me. Instead, these look sophisticated.....
....and, let's face it, like they come from the future! This pleated detail on the side obviously has some sort of aerodynamic function useful for life in outer space!
We all know that it's important to TRY EVERYTHING ON when shopping at Red Pony (or at another store, whatever, as long as we're your favourite!) as sizes vary so much across brands or time periods, and some things need to be tried on to figure out just what the heck it is. But today's refresher is about how some garments come alive when you try them on, and turn out to have a completely different look than they do on the hanger. This peach floral dress, although it had lovely colours, seemed a little bridesmaid-ish to me on the hanger....
But hold off on the sad trombone! Once it was on the mannequin this dress became something totally different to me! It's not cheesy at all! It's dramatic (the floral print is huge!) and even a bit edgy (the peach colours give way to orange, which is a totally non-traditional colour)! I love this dress (and I might have also tried it on for you over my t-shirt and puffy skirt)!
Teeny-tiny beaded earings!
Special thanks to Monteau for creating a top that features everything that my youngest daughter is allergic to!
But seriously, how awesome is this print?! (My youngest is actually only allergic to kiwi and pineapples, and her reaction is the same as Ross's on Friends when he eats kiwi! "A throw-throw")
See? Another pair of interesting, old-vampire-appropriate shorts!
Although they are not from the future or outer space, these ones are bang-on with my whole could-be-vintage-curtains thing:
Another teeny-tiny thing! I couldn't find a stamp on this pendant (although, as we've previously discussed, I am lazy and maybe did not look hard enough), but it's very heavy and feels like silver to me. Look at the level of detail, though! And how the elephant's right leg is up. So cool!
And in proper marching form, the back left leg is up! But I took this picture because I thought the tail was adorable too.
Know what else looks uninspiring on the hanger? Jumpsuits. So really, you have to try them on because you really never know what's going on from how they hang on the hanger. For example, get the trombone out again.....
But this jumpsuit actually has so much more going on with it! Drawstring waist, halter top and keyhole cut-out! And jumpsuits -more than any other garment- need to be tried on so that they may fully express themselves and all their jumpsuit-glory!
The special treat this week: an actual vintage twin-set! The short sleeves and dusty pink make it totally spring/summer appropriate knit-wear.
And check out the pavé ball-buttons!
Huge patent leather bag!
This one can be used in "triangle" form, or unhook the clasp if you need even more room for your WWK (wallet/water-bottle/knitting).
And, of course, on the bottom: little feet!
More shorts! These ones are a contemporary take on the sailor-shorts, as they are not high waisted.....
....but they do have anchors on the buttons!
From the fold-over clasp I'm guessing this bracelet is vintage (again, too lazy to do any actual sleuthing....and it's too hot outside!!). This one does have a stamp that says "100% copper". I don't know if that makes it more likely or less likely to be vintage (too...hot...out...side...to...even...think..about...it)? What I love, love, LOVE about this one is the rough, "organic" look of the stones! (What kind of stones are they? No idea. Too hot.)
So I was going to take a pic of this one just because it looked so colourful. BUT THEN when I stepped back to take a picture of it, I could make out the art deco woman and bunny! (Seriously, friends, I did not even see this when I was looking at it close up!)
AND THEN on the back is a freaking DEAR!!! This top gets better and better!
Haha, this Lululemon down vest is the same colour as my purple Lululemon tank-top and purple Lululemon sports bra!
Many important housekeeping items this week, friends. First of all, we will be closed on Sundays during August. Yes, I will miss you too, Sunday friends! Some of you know that my spouse, Rod, also owns The Acoustic Music Shop, and his only day off from his store is Sundays. So I have to cram some Family Time hours in with Rod and the kids by taking a few Sundays off from Red Pony this summer. I'll still be around, though, and I'll be sure to let you know which days I will be in the shop so that we can still hang out. For now, I will be in the shop this coming Sunday if you want to cram some Friend Time hours with me then!
Next VERY IMPORTANT, slightly secret thing. You will need to be sitting down for this. Red Pony is moving this fall. I KNOW! We are moving back to Whyte Ave, near 99 street, down by The Empress Ale House, The K&K Foodliner and...The Acoustic Music shop! The bay next to Rod's store became available, and it was too good an opportunity to pass up. At first I didn't even want to entertain moving from Garneau (our shop is soooooo cuuuuuuuuuute!! A puffed wheat square from Remedy is just one block away!! And I don't adapt well to change!!), but it very quickly came into focus what a big difference this would make for our family. And, friends, it has A PARKING LOT! A free parking lot! Now are you on board? The plan is to move at the end of September (so, realistically, we will probably be spending most of those Family Time Sundays working on renos and arguing!), and in the meantime NOTHING will change at all here at the shop. The clothes rotation will still by cycling through at the usual clip, and I'll still be here to share what I think is cool, give you updates on the renos at the New Pony and any special instructions given to me by my psychologist or yoga instructor to deal with all these changes!
SO ANYWAYS, while I was trying to take pictures of the button on those Ted Baker shorts over by the sale section (where the good light is), I accidentally took this super-spacy pic where you can see the shoe and sale section in the reflection of the button!!!!
The picture I was actually going for was this (because...buttons):
And here I am trying on the dramatic peach dress for you, which *could* work with a black band shirt and blue Fluevogs over a puffy skirt!
See you on Sunday, friends!
