Friends, do you want to hear something funny? Every Saturday this summer, someone has come into the shop looking for an outfit to wear to a wedding….that is happening that day! Luckily, I’m a super mellow person who handles unexpected, stressful situations with maturity and ease. Pfffft, snort, ahhhh.
This is one of those examples of something that looks *sad trombone* on a hanger, but is actually so gorgeous that you, you know, kind of tear up a bit and get that weird feeling of nostalgia for summer even though it is still summer.
Friends, this top is little weird (you know I love the weird things) and cute and vintagey all in one! The shape of it, the puff sleeves, the rich brocade and that collar all read as vintage……
…..but the hardware, pockets and the FEATHERED COLLAR are I’m dead.
Ha, but for real, I love the mixing of all these textures. The whole thing feels rich and luscious and like it’s making a statement without standing out too much!
Weeeeeeee, a Matt & Nat purse!
Now, friends, imma be straight with you: I have very complex feelings about Matt & Nat. I kind of put my finger on it when Red Pony friend Andrea came in and was talking about how her summer Matt & Nat purse wouldn’t fit her mom-wallet….even though the wallet was also from Matt & Nat! Come on, Matt & Nat, a bit of continuity and consistency in design can go a long way. But we still love you Matt & Nat, forget I even said anything and keep being you! Anyways, this particular Matt & Nat purse WILL fit your mom-wallet, your reusable bags, and, of course, your spouse’s wallet and keys that he asks you to carry for him! (Red Pony friend Andrea said she made her spouse pay for half the purse because he always wants to put stuff in it! Ha!)
High waisted AND cropped, these pants have all the things!
Friends, there was this one sketch from Girl Brain (Edmonton’s all girl sketch comedy group) where Alyson Dicey (I KNOW HER!!! I mean, she came into the shop once and I forced her to take a picture with me), playing a mom, delivers with dry, scathing precision the line about high waisted jeans “Those are not flattering jeans on you”. Ooooooooo, haha! Maybe you had to be there? (Maybe they’ll do that one in their Fringe show!)
Here’s what you can wear with those pants:
Or this!
So pretty!
Oh, just a teeny tiny bird necklace……
…AND earring set! How adorable are these?! They’re so tiny!
OK, friends, I really feel like this Trina Turk dress is not getting the attention it deserves. Is it a statement piece? Yes. Are there many people who like to make this brightly coloured, psychedelic-paisley type of statement? YES.
The beauty in this is that it’s not even a vintage piece, which means it is not made of 1970’s double-weight, industrial grade, suffocation polyester. The cut is also contemporary: boxy fit, pockets(!) and, importantly, not a minidress Conclusion: this is not just a novelty garment.
Ok, friends, get ready. This is also not a novelty item…..
Frye t-strap, high heel mary-janes! Can you feel gravitas of these shoes through your screen? Friends, these do NOT feel playful to me. They feel like very serious, no messing around, taking care of business, no time for any of your nonsense, get a haircut and sit up straight shoes!
I feel like they are perfect example of what I expect from Frye, who are themselves very serious about their product.
That amazing Frye patina:
….and that great Frye construction! (This sole is also not messing around! It’s like “Fine, wear a high heel if you must, but it had better have a leather AND rubber sole!”)
A DVF bodycon dress! (Supposedly this is a size 10, but I don’t know about that….)(Although, that said, higher end brands tend to be surprisingly beautiful and well fitted, even if they don’t look like it on a hanger! Forget I said anything, LBDVFD! Keep being you!)
Friends, I love the soft beige and grey on this softy! This vest has such great shape and drape (yes, yes that rhymes, but don’t let it distract you!); the design choice to not have fasteners gives it a modern/city feel instead of a baseball game/campfire vibe. (Guess which one I am, haha!)
AHA! I remembered the men’s section this week! Annnnddd dug out some vintage Wrangler!
This week in scarf: feminine yellow skulls!
AND THEN in the sale section I found this awesome Fridget hoodie! How has this not sold yet? I love the peacock blue and the detailed construction (pleated pockets! Wide band at the waist! Faux zippers at the shoulders!), and now it’s on for $17! (“$17” seems like an awkward number, but math gonna math!)
Here’s a picture -proof, if you will- that I KNOW Alyson Dicey from Girl Brain. Yes, it’s a bit blurry, but that is NOT AT ALL because she was terrified of my crazed fangirl explosion, or trying to get away from me and my scissors as I tried to cut a lock of her hair. It’s all very normal.
So, I will be away for the next two weeks, BUUUUUUUUUUUUTTTTT!!!!!!!!!!!! no worries, there will still be a blog! Hurray for routine and the warm fuzzy feeling of safety that can only come from a strict and unwavering schedule of events! There will be a slight switch up because I convinced Kennedy (who you can come visit on Mondays!) to do the blog for the next 2 weeks! Yay! For real, though, friends, our conversation went like this: “So, while I’m away I won’t be doing the blog, but I was thinking maybe you would like to-” “YES I WOULD LOVE TO DO THAT”. Haha, that actually happened! I am stoked and can’t wait to see what she comes up with! Now I feel like I get to add another fashion blog to my quick-links, and I’ll be just like you refreshing my screen every 20 minutes on Wednesday until it comes up, and then immediately phoning the shop to put a bunch of things on hold! Awwww, I’ll miss you friends!
We are closed this upcoming Monday, and, of course, Red Pony will be open while I’m away (and running more smoothly without my interference, harhar) and we can meet back up in mid-August for a looooong catch-up!
