It’s so funny, friends; I go away for a week and when I come back you would think I had never been into a store before. Not just Red Pony, but it’s like I’ve never seen a clothing store in my entire life or something! I am all “Oooo, they have purses here too! Do-di-do-di-do”. Ha, I am an embarrassment, friends, you can’t take me anywhere!
Like, hey, ooooooooo, they have jackets here too! But kidding aside, friends, the coat and jacket section has exploded! I’m actually really pumped with how cute all the coat styles are this year. I thought for sure this bomber from Aritzia was leather, but it’s actually very well done leather replica.
The quilting on here is just perfect! Sometimes I find contemporary bombers try too hard by going overboard on the details, but this one is still giving me minimalism vibes with just the right amount of femininity with through the diamond stitching.
Ah, from our local faves Oak + Fort! I am a big fan of the old-man-coat look, and it’s the kind of thing I know I can trust Oak+Fort to do right!
This coat is wool, and I tried to get a good picture for you because there is also just the slightest hint of blue specks there somewhere. This might be one to come see in real life.
How many time do you think I walked by these humble sneakers before I picked them up and realized……um, gah, WHAT?! They’re CAMPERS!!!
I am a Camper loyalist, but to be honest I had to unsubscribe from their emails because of this weird email philosophy I have adopted, blah, blah, blah it’s not really that interesting, but the point is that had I been more on top of it I would have noticed Camper heading into this new monochrome/minimalist/sneaker-aficionado direction. When I last checked in on them, they were leaning hard into their experimental/sculptural phase, so I’m glad to see a swing back this way!
Black sole, matte black upper, black skinny dress laces. There is something almost theatrical about these!
Weeeeeee, and now from our other local fave Cinder + Smoke! This skirt is adorable! I love the shape, the rust colour and burlap look of the material keeps it from looking too sweet.
Like all Cinder + Smoke designs, this skirt has pockets!
The only thing better than a drapey, wool cozy is and Eileen Fisher drapey, wool cozy! Eileen Fisher just has that magic touch that makes casual, comfortable garments look so incredibly elegant. Friends, when you try this on it feels like a bathrobe, but then you look in the mirror and suddenly you are an award winning author drinking tea in the afternoon in your New York brownstone.
Settle in, friends, because we are going to have a Big Talk about Trippen shoes. Let’s start with me! Long time readers know I have a fairly large, ahem, collection of Fluevogs. But, I also have a, um, *very reasonable and completely normal* amount of Trippen boots. Trippen is a German brand that hand-makes its shoes and boots. It’s one of those brands that you can spot from 200 meters away while in a moving car, at night, in a snow storm because they have a very distinct look: typically a hand-cut, sculptural form and an architonic sole.
On these ones I think my favourite feature is the asymmetrical “fin” at the inner ankle!
It’s such a dramatic detail, I can’t wait to see it one a human. Here you can also see the t-shaped heel….
Add the fin and the t-heel to the reversed stitching and exaggerated seams and you’ll hear someone (me) yelling from a car zooming by “Are those Trippeeeeeeeeennnnnnnn?!”
Despite all these details, we don’t have to take Trippens too seriously. Because in the end, all Trippen shoes look like a crumpled paper bag! Keep being you, Trippen!
I think this is our special treat this week: a Preloved jacket! Friends, check out all the design elements and the structured shape; this is not a typical Preloved item!
But such great attention to detail, as always. Instead of a complex mish-mash of different fabrics, they’ve toned down the use of contrasting patterns and let the shape and style of the jacket be the star.
Even across the back, they’re staying true to themselves and their missive to reusing and reclaiming materials, but kept the whole design muted and grown-up.
Ok, friends, you really do have to come in to see the beauty in real life!
The stone is absolutely gorgeous, and it’s HUGE! This is the kind of piece that will get you loads of attention and compliments (my favourite things)!
How big is it? This big:
In the men’s section I pulled out this jacket from Canadian success story Herschel:
This week’s scarf was on the Red Pony Instagram, but it definitely deserves a second look and pet!
This one is not just typical softy muppet fur. This is soft and *feathery*, friends! You really will have to come in and check this one out in real life too. (Put it on with the Oak+Fort coat and the huge green necklace to see all the things!)
This one has a slit through so that you can wear it as a pass-through….
…but I like the drama of just letting it drape!
Friends, green! GREEN! This is in the 50% off section this week, and it is so lovely someone has to come scoop it up!
I love the green, but there is also black knit throughout that makes these rose(?) patterns and gives dimension.
Guess what we got in this week, friends?? Hue tights! We stuck to basics and only ordered black, super opaque tights (with control top) in all the sizes. I love these tights so much, friends. My tights drawer at home is a graveyard of other brands of tights that claimed to be opaque but WERE DECIDEDLY NOT OPAQUE. The Hue tights are the only ones I’ve found that are legit opaque, and they are built like a German tank! I am very hard on my tights (on my feet all day, getting them caught in my boot zippers every single time because I am a very old vampire who doesn’t understand how Instagram and zippers work), and my Hue tights show no signs of all this abuse!
Seriously, friends, I live in these tights all winter long:
Special thanks to Kennedy for doing the blog last week! She reminds me of me if I was younger, super tall and understood how Instagram works. You can always visit her at Red Pony on Mondays and Wednesdays.
I had a fun mini-break in Saskatoon visiting my friend Laura where we did what all super-cool people do: dress in matching outfits every day!
And you know how I love Edmonton’s Girl Brain (and generally supporting women in arts)? In Saskatoon we went to see an all-women improv show called -wait for it- Shenanigans! They were a delight, so check them out if you are in Saskatoon!
I mean, best name ever!
So guess what, friends? Colleen is going out of town for a couple of weeks and that means I have been promoted to unqualified-shop-girl-who-is-always-in-the-shop! I’ll be in the shop on all the days (Mondays and Wednesdays in Kennedy form, Sundays invisible) and I’m so excited about it! Be sure to come for a visit so that we can have a proper catch-up! (Note: we will not be open late this Thursday or next Thursday on account of my laziness.)
